About Pearls
What are pearls?
Pearls are organic gems grown inside living mollusks, such as oysters and mussels. Unlike gemstones formed deep within the earth, pearls are created by nature in water, layer by layer, as the mollusk slowly coats a tiny starting point with nacre, the luminous material that gives pearls their soft glow. Depending on the type of pearl and growing conditions, this process can take from several months to several years. Freshwater pearls, like the ones we use, are typically cultivated for around three to five years.
Baroque pearls are not a separate type of pearl, but a name given to pearls with naturally irregular, non-spherical shapes. In many traditional freshwater pearls, the process begins with a tiny piece of mantle tissue rather than a perfectly round bead nucleus. This tissue helps form a pearl sac, where the mollusk gradually deposits layers of nacre over time.
Because there is no fixed round centre guiding the shape, the pearl grows more freely. As nacre builds layer by layer, the final form is shaped by the pearl sac, the movement of the mollusk, its growing environment and subtle natural variations inside the shell. This is why baroque pearls can have curves, ridges, soft folds or sculptural silhouettes, and why no two are ever exactly alike.
For us, this natural irregularity is what makes baroque pearls so special. Each one carries the trace of its own growth, making it less like a manufactured object and more like a small organic sculpture shaped by time, water and nature.
How We Select Pearl Quality
Every pearl is chosen by eye, with attention to the details that make it beautiful and wearable.
Lustre
Lustre is the most important quality we look for. A good pearl should have a bright, soft reflection and a sense of depth beneath the surface.
Surface
As naturally grown materials, pearls may have tiny marks or textures. We select pearls with a clean overall appearance while embracing the small natural traces that make each piece unique.
Shape
For round pearls, we look for harmony and balance. For baroque pearls, we celebrate organic shapes with expressive silhouettes and visual character.
Size
Size affects both the mood and wearability of a piece. We choose pearl sizes according to the design, making sure each piece feels elegant, comfortable and easy to style.
